How to Delete Gemini Chats (and Export Them First): Step-by-Step Guide

Google Gemini keeps a history of your conversations so you can pick up where you left off. That’s convenient — until you want to tidy up, remove something sensitive, or stop Google keeping your chats at all. This guide explains how to delete Gemini chats individually or all at once, how to control what Google keeps with Gemini Apps Activity, and how to export a Gemini chat before you delete it.

The steps below are based on Google’s Gemini Apps Help pages for personal Google accounts, checked in September 2026. If you use Gemini through a work or school account, your administrator controls some of these settings.

    Quick answer

    • Delete one chat: hover over the chat in the side panel → More (three dots) → Delete.
    • Delete all chats: Settings & helpActivityDeleteAll time.
    • Stop saving chats: turn off Keep Activity in Gemini Apps Activity.
    • Delete automatically: set auto-delete to 3, 18 or 36 months.
    • Save a chat first: use Share & exportExport to Docs, or download your data with Google Takeout.

How to delete a single Gemini chat on a computer

    1. Go to gemini.google.com and sign in.
    2. If the side panel is hidden, click the Menu icon to show your chats.
    3. Hover over the chat you want to remove under Recent (or Pinned).
    4. Click More (the three-dot icon).
    5. Select Delete, then confirm.

According to Google, deleting a chat also deletes it from your Gemini Apps Activity, along with content created in that chat, such as Canvas documents.

How to delete a Gemini chat on Android or iPhone

    1. Open the Gemini app (or Gemini in the Google app on iPhone).
    2. Open the list of chats (tap the menu or your chat history).
    3. Touch and hold the chat you want to remove, or tap More next to it.
    4. Tap Delete and confirm.

Menu wording varies slightly between Android, iPhone and app versions, but the option is always attached to the individual chat.

How to delete all Gemini chats at once

Gemini doesn’t have a “select several chats” button in the chat list, but you can clear everything through your activity settings:

    1. Go to gemini.google.com.
    2. Select Settings & help, then Activity.
    3. Click Delete.
    4. Choose All time to remove everything, or Last hour, Last day or Custom range.
    5. Confirm the deletion.

You can also delete a specific day, or individual items, by clicking the delete icon next to them on the Activity page.

Turn off Keep Activity (stop saving new chats)

If you don’t want Google to keep your Gemini conversations in your account history:

    1. Go to Settings & help → Activity in Gemini.
    2. Turn off Keep Activity (previously called Gemini Apps Activity).
    3. Choose whether to also delete existing activity.

What happens when Keep Activity is off? Google says conversations are still saved with your account for up to 72 hours so it can provide the service and process feedback, but they won’t appear in your Gemini Apps Activity. Some features — such as seeing and returning to past chats — require Keep Activity to be on.

Set Gemini to auto-delete old chats

    A middle ground is auto-delete:

    1. Open Settings & help → Activity.
    2. Find the auto-delete option.
    3. Choose 3 months, 18 months or 36 months — or turn auto-delete off.

By default, Google automatically deletes activity older than 18 months. Choosing 3 months is a good privacy-friendly setting for most people.

    What deleting doesn’t remove

A few things are worth knowing:

    • Human-reviewed conversations: Google explains that some conversations may be reviewed by trained reviewers to improve its services. Google’s privacy notice states that reviewed conversations are stored separately and kept for a longer period (up to three years), and are not removed when you delete your Gemini Apps Activity. This is why you should never enter confidential information you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see.
    • Saved info: if you’ve asked Gemini to remember things about you (preferences, facts about your work), these are stored in Saved info, separate from chat history. Delete them in Settings & help → Saved info.
    • Shared links: if you shared a public link to a chat, manage or delete it separately under Settings & help → Your public links.
    • Exported copies: anything you exported to Google Docs, Gmail drafts or downloads stays there until you delete it.
    • Other Google services: content created with Gemini in Gmail, Docs or Drive lives in those apps.

Common mistakes when deleting Gemini chats

    • Deleting in the wrong Google account. If you use more than one account, check the profile picture in the top-right corner before deleting.
    • Forgetting Saved info. Clearing chats doesn’t remove the facts Gemini has been asked to remember. Review Saved info separately.
    • Leaving public links active. A shared link can still be viewed until you delete it from your public links list.
    • Not exporting first. Once a chat is deleted from your activity, you can’t restore it. Export useful responses to Docs before clearing history.
    • Assuming Keep Activity off means instant deletion. Google may still hold conversations for up to 72 hours to provide the service.

How to export a Gemini chat before deleting it

Before clearing your history, save anything useful. Gemini’s built-in export options work per response rather than for a whole conversation at once.

Export a response to Google Docs

    1. Open the chat.
    2. Under the response you want to keep, click Share & export.
    3. Select Export to Docs.
    4. A new Google Doc opens in your Drive with the response.

    Draft in Gmail

Choose Share & export → Draft in Gmail to create an email draft containing the response — handy for sending an AI-drafted reply after you’ve edited it.

    Copy the response

Click the Copy icon under a response and paste it into any document or notes app.

    Share a public link

Use Share to create a public link to the chat. Anyone with the link can view it, so only use this for non-sensitive content, and delete the link when you no longer need it.

Download all your Gemini data with Google Takeout

    To keep a full archive:

    1. Go to takeout.google.com.
    2. Click Deselect all, then select My Activity (and choose Gemini Apps activity within it if offered).
    3. Choose your export format and delivery method.
    4. Create the export and download the file when Google emails you.

Third-party browser extensions can export whole Gemini conversations as PDF or Markdown. Be careful: extensions can read what’s on your screen, so only use well-reviewed ones and never on a work account without permission.

How to rename or pin Gemini chats

If your goal is organisation rather than deletion:

    • Rename: hover over a chat → MoreRename.
    • Pin: hover over a chat → MorePin to keep it at the top.
    • Search: click the Search icon to find a past chat by keyword.

Gemini chats on work or school accounts

If you use Gemini with a Google Workspace account, your administrator decides whether activity is kept, for how long, and whether you can delete it. Workspace versions of Gemini also follow your organisation’s data protection terms. If you can’t find the delete or activity options, contact your IT administrator.

Privacy tips for small businesses using Gemini

    1. Use a business account. Gemini in Google Workspace offers stronger enterprise data protection than personal accounts.
    2. Don’t paste sensitive data — customer personal details, payment information, passwords or confidential contracts — into consumer AI tools.
    3. Set auto-delete to 3 months on personal accounts used for work tasks.
    4. Review Saved info occasionally so Gemini doesn’t remember outdated or sensitive details.
    5. Write an AI use policy so staff know which tools are approved and what they can share.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I delete my Gemini chat history?

Go to gemini.google.com → Settings & help → Activity → Delete → All time. To delete a single chat, use the three-dot menu next to it and choose Delete.

Are deleted Gemini chats gone forever?

They’re removed from your Gemini Apps Activity. However, conversations that were selected for human review may be stored separately for longer, according to Google’s privacy notice, and exported copies remain wherever you saved them.

Can I delete multiple Gemini chats at once?

Not by selecting several chats in the list. Use the Activity page to delete by time range — last hour, last day, a custom range or all time.

How do I export a Gemini chat?

Use Share & export under a response to export it to Google Docs or draft it in Gmail, copy the text, or download all your activity with Google Takeout.

Why can’t I see my old Gemini chats?

Keep Activity may be turned off, auto-delete may have removed them, you may be signed in to a different Google account, or your Workspace administrator may control activity settings.

Does turning off Keep Activity delete my existing chats?

Not automatically. Google gives you the option to delete existing activity when you turn it off; otherwise, your past activity remains until you delete it or it’s removed by auto-delete.

    The bottom line

Deleting Gemini chats is simple once you know where to look: use the three-dot menu for single chats, the Activity page for bulk deletion, and auto-delete or Keep Activity to control what’s saved in future. Export anything important to Google Docs or Takeout first, and remember that the safest approach is not to share sensitive information with any AI chatbot in the first place.

  • How to Cancel Your ChatGPT Subscription (Web, iPhone, Android and Business)

How to Cancel Your ChatGPT Subscription (Web, iPhone, Android and Business)

Whether you’re cutting costs, switching to another AI assistant or simply not using it enough, it’s easy to cancel your ChatGPT subscription — as long as you cancel in the right place. The most common reason people keep getting charged is that they try to cancel on the website when they actually subscribed through the iPhone or Android app, or the other way round.

This guide shows exactly how to cancel a ChatGPT subscription on every platform, what happens to your chats and billing afterwards, how refunds work, and what to do if the cancel button doesn’t appear. These steps apply to ChatGPT Go, Plus and Pro, with a separate section for Business workspaces.

Before you cancel: check where you subscribed

Your subscription is managed by whoever bills you:

    You subscribed throughWhere to cancel
    chatgpt.com (card or PayPal)ChatGPT Settings → Billing
The ChatGPT iPhone or iPad appApple ID subscriptions (iPhone Settings)
The ChatGPT Android appGoogle Play subscriptions
A ChatGPT Business workspaceWorkspace settings → Billing (admins only)

Not sure? Search your email for the receipt. An Apple receipt means Apple; a Google Play receipt means Google; an email from OpenAI means the website.

How to cancel ChatGPT on the website (chatgpt.com)

If you subscribed on the website, follow these steps from OpenAI’s help centre:

    1. Go to chatgpt.com and sign in.
    2. Click your profile name or icon to open the account menu.
    3. Select Settings.
    4. Open the Billing section (on some layouts this sits under Account).
    5. Next to Cancel plan, select Cancel.
    6. Confirm the cancellation.

You’ll usually see a confirmation message and receive an email. Your plan stays active until the end of the current billing period.

Tip: do this on a computer or in a mobile browser. The ChatGPT app may not show web billing options.

How to cancel ChatGPT on iPhone or iPad

If you subscribed inside the iOS app, Apple manages the subscription:

    1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
    2. Tap your name at the top.
    3. Tap Subscriptions.
    4. Tap ChatGPT.
    5. Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.

If you don’t see ChatGPT listed, you’re probably signed in with a different Apple ID, or you subscribed on the website instead.

How to cancel ChatGPT on Android

If you subscribed through the Android app, Google Play manages it.

    In the Play Store app:

    1. Open the Google Play Store app.
    2. Tap your profile icon, then Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
    3. Select ChatGPT.
    4. Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.

    On the web:

    1. Visit the Google Play subscriptions page in your browser and sign in.
    2. Find ChatGPT and select Manage.
    3. Select Cancel subscription and confirm.

How to cancel a ChatGPT Business workspace

Only a workspace owner or admin can cancel a Business plan:

    1. Sign in to ChatGPT with the admin account.
    2. Open the account menu and choose Workspace settings.
    3. Select Billing.
    4. Choose Manage plan.
    5. Select Cancel subscription and confirm.

Before cancelling a team plan: tell your team, export anything important from shared projects and custom GPTs, and check the billing terms — annual Business plans may run until the end of the committed term. If you only want to reduce costs, consider removing unused seats instead of cancelling the whole workspace.

    What happens after you cancel?

    • You keep access until the end of your billing period. OpenAI states that paid features remain available until the current period ends.
    • You move to the Free plan afterwards. You can keep using ChatGPT with free-plan limits.
    • Your chats stay. Cancelling doesn’t delete your conversation history. Some paid-only features, such as certain custom GPTs or projects, may become limited.
    • No automatic refund. Cancelling stops future charges but doesn’t refund past payments.

Cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date to make sure you aren’t charged again.

Can you get a refund on ChatGPT Plus?

Cancellation doesn’t trigger a refund automatically. If you think you’re entitled to one:

    • Website subscriptions: contact OpenAI support through the help centre.
    • Apple subscriptions: request a refund from Apple through its “Report a problem” process.
    • Google Play subscriptions: request a refund through Google Play, following Google’s refund policy.

UK consumers have certain rights for digital services, including in some cases a cancellation period for new subscriptions. The details depend on the terms you accepted and whether you’ve already used the service, so check your receipt and the provider’s terms.

Cancelling vs deleting your ChatGPT account

    These are different:

    • Cancel subscription: stops paying and returns you to the Free plan. Your account and chats stay.
    • Delete account: permanently removes your account and data, subject to OpenAI’s retention policy. You can find this in Settings → Account (or Data Controls).

Important: if you subscribed through Apple or Google, deleting your ChatGPT account does not automatically cancel the app store subscription. Cancel the subscription first, then delete the account if you want to.

If you want to keep a copy of your history, use Settings → Data Controls → Export data before deleting.

Troubleshooting: “I can’t find the cancel button”

    • You subscribed through an app store. Cancel in Apple or Google Play, not in ChatGPT.
    • You’re signed in to the wrong account. Check the email address in ChatGPT settings, especially if you use both personal and work accounts.
    • You’re a member, not an admin, of a Business workspace. Ask the workspace owner to remove you or cancel.
    • You’re using the mobile app. Try the website in a browser for web subscriptions.
    • Payment failed or the plan already lapsed. The option may not show if the subscription is already inactive — check your bank or card statement.
    • You’re still being charged after cancelling. Check whether you have two subscriptions (for example, one on the web and one through Apple). Contact support with your receipts if charges continue.

Should you downgrade instead of cancelling?

If cost is the main reason, consider:

    • Switching from Plus to Go, if you mainly need more messages rather than advanced features.
    • Moving from Pro to Plus, if you rarely hit Plus limits.
    • Reducing Business seats to the people who use ChatGPT daily.

Our ChatGPT pricing UK guide compares every plan, and our Claude vs ChatGPT and Copilot vs ChatGPT comparisons can help if you’re switching tools.

Managing ChatGPT subscriptions across a small business

In many small businesses, staff sign up for ChatGPT Plus on their own cards or company cards without anyone keeping track. Over time you can end up paying for several individual subscriptions, some of which nobody uses. A quick review every quarter keeps costs and data risks under control.

    1. List every AI subscription. Check company card statements and expense claims for OpenAI, Apple and Google Play charges.
    2. Ask each person how often they use it. Daily users usually justify a paid plan; occasional users can move to Free.
    3. Consolidate into a Business workspace if two or more people use ChatGPT with company or customer information. The admin can then add or remove people centrally.
    4. Cancel personal subscriptions once people have moved to the workspace, so you aren’t paying twice.
    5. Build cancellation into your leaver process. When someone leaves, remove them from the workspace and cancel any company-paid individual subscription on the same day.
    6. Record who owns each account in a simple spreadsheet with renewal dates.

This also helps with data protection. Under UK GDPR, you should know which tools process customer personal data. Individual accounts on personal emails make that much harder to manage than a single business workspace with clear settings.

    Checklist before you cancel

    1. Confirm where you subscribed (web, Apple or Google).
    2. Note your renewal date and cancel at least 24 hours before it.
    3. Export any chats, files or custom GPT instructions you want to keep.
    4. For teams, tell colleagues and move shared work to another tool.
    5. Save the cancellation confirmation email.
    6. Check your next statement to make sure no further charge appears.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I cancel ChatGPT Plus?

Go to chatgpt.com → Settings → Billing → Cancel plan. If you subscribed in the iPhone or Android app, cancel through Apple or Google Play instead.

Will I lose my chats if I cancel?

No. Cancelling your subscription keeps your account and chat history. Only deleting your account removes them.

Do I still have access after cancelling?

Yes, until the end of the current billing period. After that, you’re moved to the Free plan.

Can I cancel ChatGPT at any time?

Yes, monthly subscriptions can be cancelled at any time, and they stop at the end of the billing period. Annual business plans may have commitment terms.

Why am I still being charged after cancelling?

The most common cause is a second subscription through a different platform, such as the web and the App Store. Check both, and contact support with your receipts.

    Can I resubscribe later?

Yes. You can upgrade again from the Free plan at any time, and your chat history will still be there.

    The bottom line

To cancel a ChatGPT subscription, go to wherever you pay: ChatGPT Settings → Billing for website subscriptions, iPhone Settings → Subscriptions for Apple, or Google Play → Subscriptions for Android. Cancel at least a day before renewal, keep your confirmation email, and remember you keep your chats and can continue on the Free plan.
