How to Cancel Your ChatGPT Subscription (Web, iPhone, Android and Business)

Whether you’re cutting costs, switching to another AI assistant or simply not using it enough, it’s easy to cancel your ChatGPT subscription — as long as you cancel in the right place. The most common reason people keep getting charged is that they try to cancel on the website when they actually subscribed through the iPhone or Android app, or the other way round.

This guide shows exactly how to cancel a ChatGPT subscription on every platform, what happens to your chats and billing afterwards, how refunds work, and what to do if the cancel button doesn’t appear. These steps apply to ChatGPT Go, Plus and Pro, with a separate section for Business workspaces.

Before you cancel: check where you subscribed

Your subscription is managed by whoever bills you:

You subscribed throughWhere to cancel
chatgpt.com (card or PayPal)ChatGPT Settings → Billing
The ChatGPT iPhone or iPad appApple ID subscriptions (iPhone Settings)
The ChatGPT Android appGoogle Play subscriptions
A ChatGPT Business workspaceWorkspace settings → Billing (admins only)

Not sure? Search your email for the receipt. An Apple receipt means Apple; a Google Play receipt means Google; an email from OpenAI means the website.

How to cancel ChatGPT on the website (chatgpt.com)

If you subscribed on the website, follow these steps from OpenAI’s help centre:

  1. Go to chatgpt.com and sign in.
  2. Click your profile name or icon to open the account menu.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Open the Billing section (on some layouts this sits under Account).
  5. Next to Cancel plan, select Cancel.
  6. Confirm the cancellation.

You’ll usually see a confirmation message and receive an email. Your plan stays active until the end of the current billing period.

Tip: do this on a computer or in a mobile browser. The ChatGPT app may not show web billing options.

How to cancel ChatGPT on iPhone or iPad

If you subscribed inside the iOS app, Apple manages the subscription:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your name at the top.
  3. Tap Subscriptions.
  4. Tap ChatGPT.
  5. Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.

If you don’t see ChatGPT listed, you’re probably signed in with a different Apple ID, or you subscribed on the website instead.

How to cancel ChatGPT on Android

If you subscribed through the Android app, Google Play manages it.

In the Play Store app:

  1. Open the Google Play Store app.
  2. Tap your profile icon, then Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  3. Select ChatGPT.
  4. Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.

On the web:

  1. Visit the Google Play subscriptions page in your browser and sign in.
  2. Find ChatGPT and select Manage.
  3. Select Cancel subscription and confirm.

How to cancel a ChatGPT Business workspace

Only a workspace owner or admin can cancel a Business plan:

  1. Sign in to ChatGPT with the admin account.
  2. Open the account menu and choose Workspace settings.
  3. Select Billing.
  4. Choose Manage plan.
  5. Select Cancel subscription and confirm.

Before cancelling a team plan: tell your team, export anything important from shared projects and custom GPTs, and check the billing terms — annual Business plans may run until the end of the committed term. If you only want to reduce costs, consider removing unused seats instead of cancelling the whole workspace.

What happens after you cancel?

  • You keep access until the end of your billing period. OpenAI states that paid features remain available until the current period ends.
  • You move to the Free plan afterwards. You can keep using ChatGPT with free-plan limits.
  • Your chats stay. Cancelling doesn’t delete your conversation history. Some paid-only features, such as certain custom GPTs or projects, may become limited.
  • No automatic refund. Cancelling stops future charges but doesn’t refund past payments.

Cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date to make sure you aren’t charged again.

Can you get a refund on ChatGPT Plus?

Cancellation doesn’t trigger a refund automatically. If you think you’re entitled to one:

  • Website subscriptions: contact OpenAI support through the help centre.
  • Apple subscriptions: request a refund from Apple through its “Report a problem” process.
  • Google Play subscriptions: request a refund through Google Play, following Google’s refund policy.

UK consumers have certain rights for digital services, including in some cases a cancellation period for new subscriptions. The details depend on the terms you accepted and whether you’ve already used the service, so check your receipt and the provider’s terms.

Cancelling vs deleting your ChatGPT account

These are different:

  • Cancel subscription: stops paying and returns you to the Free plan. Your account and chats stay.
  • Delete account: permanently removes your account and data, subject to OpenAI’s retention policy. You can find this in Settings → Account (or Data Controls).

Important: if you subscribed through Apple or Google, deleting your ChatGPT account does not automatically cancel the app store subscription. Cancel the subscription first, then delete the account if you want to.

If you want to keep a copy of your history, use Settings → Data Controls → Export data before deleting.

Troubleshooting: “I can’t find the cancel button”

  • You subscribed through an app store. Cancel in Apple or Google Play, not in ChatGPT.
  • You’re signed in to the wrong account. Check the email address in ChatGPT settings, especially if you use both personal and work accounts.
  • You’re a member, not an admin, of a Business workspace. Ask the workspace owner to remove you or cancel.
  • You’re using the mobile app. Try the website in a browser for web subscriptions.
  • Payment failed or the plan already lapsed. The option may not show if the subscription is already inactive — check your bank or card statement.
  • You’re still being charged after cancelling. Check whether you have two subscriptions (for example, one on the web and one through Apple). Contact support with your receipts if charges continue.

Should you downgrade instead of cancelling?

If cost is the main reason, consider:

  • Switching from Plus to Go, if you mainly need more messages rather than advanced features.
  • Moving from Pro to Plus, if you rarely hit Plus limits.
  • Reducing Business seats to the people who use ChatGPT daily.

Managing ChatGPT subscriptions across a small business

In many small businesses, staff sign up for ChatGPT Plus on their own cards or company cards without anyone keeping track. Over time you can end up paying for several individual subscriptions, some of which nobody uses. A quick review every quarter keeps costs and data risks under control.

  1. List every AI subscription. Check company card statements and expense claims for OpenAI, Apple and Google Play charges.
  2. Ask each person how often they use it. Daily users usually justify a paid plan; occasional users can move to Free.
  3. Consolidate into a Business workspace if two or more people use ChatGPT with company or customer information. The admin can then add or remove people centrally.
  4. Cancel personal subscriptions once people have moved to the workspace, so you aren’t paying twice.
  5. Build cancellation into your leaver process. When someone leaves, remove them from the workspace and cancel any company-paid individual subscription on the same day.
  6. Record who owns each account in a simple spreadsheet with renewal dates.

This also helps with data protection. Under UK GDPR, you should know which tools process customer personal data. Individual accounts on personal emails make that much harder to manage than a single business workspace with clear settings.

Checklist before you cancel

  1. Confirm where you subscribed (web, Apple or Google).
  2. Note your renewal date and cancel at least 24 hours before it.
  3. Export any chats, files or custom GPT instructions you want to keep.
  4. For teams, tell colleagues and move shared work to another tool.
  5. Save the cancellation confirmation email.
  6. Check your next statement to make sure no further charge appears.

Frequently asked questions

How do I cancel ChatGPT Plus?

Go to chatgpt.com → Settings → Billing → Cancel plan. If you subscribed in the iPhone or Android app, cancel through Apple or Google Play instead.

Will I lose my chats if I cancel?

No. Cancelling your subscription keeps your account and chat history. Only deleting your account removes them.

Do I still have access after cancelling?

Yes, until the end of the current billing period. After that, you’re moved to the Free plan.

Can I cancel ChatGPT at any time?

Yes, monthly subscriptions can be cancelled at any time, and they stop at the end of the billing period. Annual business plans may have commitment terms.

Why am I still being charged after cancelling?

The most common cause is a second subscription through a different platform, such as the web and the App Store. Check both, and contact support with your receipts.

Can I resubscribe later?

Yes. You can upgrade again from the Free plan at any time, and your chat history will still be there.

The bottom line

To cancel a ChatGPT subscription, go to wherever you pay: ChatGPT Settings → Billing for website subscriptions, iPhone Settings → Subscriptions for Apple, or Google Play → Subscriptions for Android. Cancel at least a day before renewal, keep your confirmation email, and remember you keep your chats and can continue on the Free plan.
