Quick answer: Claude pricing UK (September 2026): the Free plan costs nothing, Pro is $20 a month (roughly £20 once VAT and conversion are added), Max starts at $100 a month, and Team seats start from $20 per person billed annually. Anthropic charges in US dollars, so the amount in pounds varies slightly each month.

Claude, made by Anthropic, has become a favourite of small business owners who write a lot – proposals, policies, customer emails, website copy – and of anyone who needs to work through long documents. But working out what it costs in the UK is not as simple as reading a price tag. Anthropic lists its prices in US dollars, UK customers pay VAT on top, and the final amount in pounds moves with the exchange rate. This guide explains Claude pricing in the UK, what each plan includes, and how to pick the right one.

What Claude costs in pounds

Because Anthropic bills in dollars, a UK consumer subscription is converted into pounds by your card provider and UK VAT at 20% is added. In practice, that means a $20 Pro subscription usually works out at a little under or a little over £20 a month, depending on the exchange rate on the day and any foreign transaction fee your bank charges.

Two practical tips:

  • Use a card without foreign transaction fees. Many business cards and challenger banks charge nothing on dollar payments, which saves around 3% compared with some high-street cards.
  • Check VAT treatment for your business. If you are VAT-registered and subscribe as a business, speak to your accountant about how the VAT on digital services from overseas suppliers should be handled in your records.

Claude Free

The free plan lets you chat with Claude on the web, desktop and mobile apps. It includes web search, file creation, code execution, memory and artifacts – small documents, tables and apps that Claude builds alongside the chat. The main limit is usage: after a certain amount of back-and-forth in a session you are asked to wait before continuing.

For a business owner who wants help with a few emails and documents a week, the free plan is a good way to find out whether Claude’s writing style suits you before paying.

Claude Pro

Pro is the plan most small businesses should consider first. It costs $20 a month, or the equivalent of $17 a month if you pay for a year upfront, and adds:

  • At least five times the free plan’s usage per five-hour session
  • Projects – workspaces where you store reference documents such as your price list, brand guidelines or policies so Claude uses them in every chat
  • Access to multiple Claude models, including the most capable ones
  • Claude Code for developers
  • Document, slide and design tools
  • Extensions for Chrome and Microsoft 365

Projects are the feature that makes Pro worthwhile for most businesses. Upload your tone-of-voice notes, standard terms and product information once, and every draft Claude produces inside that project starts from your real business details rather than generic text.

How Claude usage limits work

Claude’s paid plans are sold on usage rather than a fixed number of messages. Your allowance resets over a rolling five-hour session, and how quickly you use it depends on what you ask. A short question about wording uses very little; asking Claude to read a 60-page contract, analyse a large spreadsheet or write a long report uses much more, because Claude has to process far more text.

This is why two people on the same plan can have very different experiences. Someone who sends quick emails all day may never see a limit on Pro, while someone who uploads large files into long conversations may hit it by lunchtime. A few habits stretch your allowance considerably:

  • Upload reference files once into a Project instead of pasting them into every chat.
  • Ask for a summary of a long document first, then work from the summary.
  • Start a new chat when you change task, rather than continuing one very long thread.
  • Save heavy analysis for when you really need it, and use quick chats for simple wording jobs.

Claude Max

Max is for people who use Claude all day. It starts at $100 a month for five times Pro’s usage, with a higher tier offering twenty times Pro’s usage. Max subscribers also get higher output limits, priority access at busy times and early access to new features.

Most small business owners will never need Max. It suits developers who use Claude Code heavily, consultants who process large volumes of documents, and anyone who regularly sees the “usage limit reached” message on Pro.

Claude Team and Enterprise

Team plans bring Claude into a business with central billing, admin controls, single sign-on and enterprise search across connected tools. There are two seat types, so you can give most staff standard seats and upgrade only the heaviest users to premium seats. Enterprise adds advanced security and compliance features such as audit logs, SCIM user provisioning, role-based permissions and custom data-retention settings.

Moving to Team is worth considering as soon as staff are putting customer or employee information into an AI tool. Business plans come with business terms on data use, and admin controls let you remove access when someone leaves. Our guide to using AI tools and UK GDPR explains what to check.

Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini on price

At the individual level the three big assistants are priced almost identically, at around £18 to £20 a month for the main paid plan. The deciding factors are therefore strengths rather than price:

  • Claude is widely rated for natural, careful writing and for working through long documents.
  • ChatGPT has the broadest ecosystem, including custom GPTs and strong image tools – see our ChatGPT pricing UK guide.
  • Gemini bundles storage and works inside Gmail and Google Docs – see our Gemini pricing UK guide.

How to get the most from a Claude subscription

  1. Set up a Project for your business. Add your services, prices, policies and a few examples of writing you like.
  2. Write custom instructions. Tell Claude your business name, your customers and the tone you want, so you are not repeating it in every chat.
  3. Keep chats focused. Long conversations use up more of your allowance. Start a fresh chat for a new task.
  4. Check facts. Claude can be wrong. Always check figures, legal points and anything you publish.
  5. Review usage monthly. If you rarely hit limits, stay on Pro or drop to Free; if you hit them constantly, consider Max.

How to cancel Claude Pro or Max

If you subscribed on the web, open Claude, go to Settings, then Billing, and choose to cancel your plan. Claude pricing UK: frequently asked questions

How much is Claude Pro in the UK?

Claude Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually. UK customers pay in pounds after conversion, with VAT added, so the monthly cost is usually close to £20 depending on the exchange rate.

Is Claude free to use?

Yes. The free plan includes chat, web search, file creation and memory, with lower usage limits than paid plans.

Why does my Claude bill change each month?

Because Anthropic prices in US dollars, the amount in pounds depends on the exchange rate when your card is charged, plus any fee your bank adds.

Is Claude Max worth it?

Only if you regularly hit the limits of Pro. For most small business owners, Pro is enough.

Can a small business use Claude Team?

Yes. Team plans are designed for small teams and add central billing, admin controls and business data terms.

Can I switch between Claude plans?

Yes. You can upgrade from Free to Pro, move from Pro to Max, or downgrade at any time from your billing settings. Downgrades normally take effect at the end of the current billing period, so you keep the higher limits until then.

Does Claude charge VAT in the UK?

Yes. UK customers are charged VAT on Claude subscriptions. Business owners should check the correct VAT treatment with their accountant.
